The Village of Lemont was incorporated in 1873 and is one of the oldest communities in the northeastern part of Illinois. Located in Cook, DuPage, and Will counties, Lemont is home to several heavy industrial sites including the Argonne National Laboratory- a science and engineering research lab operated by the University of Chicago Argonne LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy. In the mid-1800s, limestone quarrying was a major industry in this village. The famous Chicago Water Tower that stands today on Michigan Avenue was even constructed with Lemont limestone. Over the years Lemont has experienced tremendous growth and now has a population of over 16,000.
